We are angered and disgusted by news of the recent racist and sexist murders in Atlanta. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American, Asian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and we stand against Asian hate. This attack, like so much other violence in this country and around the world, is rooted in white supremacy. We must fight racism and white supremacy in all of its forms.
The Asian community has experienced oppression and violence in America for hundreds of years. Asian American women are disproportionately the targets of racist and sexist attacks. This recent event is no exception and occurs in a context where racism, sexism, and gun violence are a part of American culture and history. We acknowledge the ongoing trauma and fear experienced by our Asian staff, mentors, members, friends, and neighbors.
Our Clubhouses must be havens for members of all marginalized communities. Our youth are aware of all that is happening in the world. When people are attacked for being Asian or for being women, our youth feel it and know it could have been them or someone they love. As we build community in our spaces, we must also build solidarity.
